Christie C. Yerby, Naturopathic Medical Doctor

Send Page To a Friend

Dr. Christie C. Yerby is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor, author, and public speaker.

Having successfully received her doctorate degree from the four-year medical curriculum at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences (Tempe, Arizona), Dr. Yerby completed both the national naturopathic licensing testing process plus the Arizona State licensing board tests in medical sciences and clinical subjects, the gold standard of testing not achieved by most naturopathic doctors. She is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the governing body of naturopathic doctors, whose members include only graduates from accredited North American naturopathic schools and those practitioners who have taken the physician’s oath of integrity.

In addition to her U.S. clinical internship, Dr. Yerby expanded her studies and interest of natural medicines to include international observations and experience in the Caribbean, experiencing the healing power of Nature at its purest by working there side-by-side with the doctors native to their countries. Her subtropical visits include traveling to Cuba three times as a journalist and researcher to observe their medical system (free of Western pharmaceuticals), a short study with Andrew Weil, MD, in the jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, studying first-hand with him the natural botanical medicines located there, plus additional clinical work in Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Hawaii.

Her work focuses on both the prevention of disease and the treatment of chronic conditions. Emphasis is always on detoxification of the mind and body so the obstacles to health are removed and healing can begin.

Dr. Yerby teaches the importance of taking responsibility for one’s own health and encourages an active partnership between patient and doctor to facilitate a safe and successful health program. She works closely with medical doctors (MDs), forming an integrative approach to healing for the benefit of those seeking the best of care from both conventional and alternative medicines. This complementary approach to medicine is especially helpful with the more seriously ill conditions, which may require pharmaceuticals or surgical intervention.

NDs undergo the same intense medical science training, as do MDs. Naturopathic doctors, however, complete many hours of additional training that MDs do not receive, and are the only primary care physicians who are clinically experienced in the use of a wide variety of natural treatments. Although trained in the chemistry and application of pharmaceutical drugs, naturopathic doctors will usually first choose a drug-free course of action.

A journalist by undergraduate degree, Dr. Yerby regularly writes The Healing Power of Nature, a monthly newspaper column, within which a variety of health concerns are discussed with suggestions on how natural medicines may be supportive or beneficial. Her book, Health Without Hospitals, is a collection of those published articles.
